Óbidos celebrates the festival of chocolate
– Party with chocolate on the Silver Coast
The streets of Óbidos will be lined with chocolate for one last weekend. The annual International Festival of Chocolate has returned to this historic Silver Coast town to offer the world’s favourite confectionary in every form imaginable. This celebration of all things chocolate goes way beyond the familiar sweet-sized treat. The festival, back for its 14th year on the Silver Coast, takes chocolate to new levels by incorporating it in everything from alcohol to artworks. There is even a fashion parade in which the models wear chocolate.
As well as a chance to sample some of the best chocolates in the world a big attraction of the event is to watch what the country’s top chefs can do with the stuff. There are demonstrations and master classes on most days of the festival, including special sessions for children and even classes on how to cook healthily with chocolate.
The Óbidos chocolate festival is open from 10am to 8pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday until April 24, with a final closing day on Monday April 25 (also 10am to 8pm). Ticket prices are €6 for adults and €3 for children up to the age of 12. More details (in Portuguese) are available on the Óbidos chocolate festival site.
Óbidos is located just off the A8 motorway which runs from Lisbon to Leiria. Come off the motorway at Junction 15 and take the second exit from the roundabout. There is extensive car parking on the left hand side of the road at the top of the hill.
